Notes on Quiet Browsing
Browsing should feel like moving through a library table, not a casino floor.
People often say they want a cleaner web when what they really want is a slower one.
Cleaner can still be aggressive. Cleaner can still be packed with nudges, pressure, and small tricks for extracting attention. What most of us miss is the feeling that a page is willing to let us arrive at our own pace.
Browsing is a form of reading before the reading starts.
That means an archive page has a job beyond indexing. It should prepare attention gently.
What helps
- quiet metadata
- obvious paths back out
- enough contrast to orient, not so much contrast that everything competes
What breaks it
- loud card grids everywhere
- surprise motion
- a homepage written like a landing page
